Common Questions

How do I record a trip?
Tap Start Trip. That's it. Your current speed fills the screen, with top speed, average, and distance beneath it. When you're done, slide the control at the bottom to stop, then save the trip or resume it. Category, units, and a name can all be set after the trip.

Why is there no pause or cancel button?
So nothing can end or alter a trip by accident in a pocket or a glove. Stop is a slide, and it isn't final: the stopped screen offers Resume, and stopped time never counts toward your duration or average.

Does recording continue if I lock my phone or switch apps?
Yes. A trip keeps recording in the background until you slide to stop. While the app is open, the screen stays on.

The speed reads low or drops out.
Speed comes from GPS, which can lag a second or two and can drop out under tunnels, dense trees, or tall buildings. Make sure Precise Location is on for Gauge in iOS Settings. Gauge is not a substitute for your vehicle's speedometer.

Can I use knots, or kilometers?
Yes. Choose US, Metric, or Nautical units in Settings. Boat trips use knots and nautical miles automatically, and any trip can be switched to different units afterward.

What is included in Gauge Pro?
Gauge Pro keeps every trip you record, for as long as you like, and adds filtering by category and sorting by top speed, average, or distance. It is $9.99 per year and includes a 7-day free trial. The speedometer itself, route maps, sharing, and your three most recent trips are free and always will be.

Does Gauge track my location or send my data anywhere?
No. Location is used only to measure speed and distance while a trip is recording. Your trips, and your routes if Record Route is on, are stored only on your phone. There are no accounts and no analytics. Maps are drawn by Apple Maps.
